Health Outcomes Survey (HOS)
The Medicare Health Outcomes Survey (HOS) was launched in 1998 as a part of the Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS®). The Medicare HOS is the first outcomes measure used in Medicare managed care and the largest survey effort ever undertaken by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The goal of the Medicare HOS program is to gather valid and reliable health status data in Medicare managed care for use in quality improvement activities, plan accountability, public reporting, and improving health. Several types of Medicare HOS data files are available for research purposes.
