About the SEER-MHOS Linked Data

NCI and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have collaborated to link two leading data sets and make them available for researchers. NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) is the premier source for U.S. cancer statistics.  The Medicare Health Outcomes Survey (MHOS) is a national survey of sampled Medicare Advantage beneficiaries that gathers data to be used to assess the physical health, mental health, and functional status of respondents over a 2-year time period.

The SEER registry includes data on cancer incidence, and survival for most primary cancer cases. Examples of data contained in the registry are the following:  month, year of diagnosis, site of cancer, histology, grade, and state as well as initial surgical and radiation treatment within 12 months of diagnosis. Thus, the SEER-MHOS linked data set is a surveillance data set that links data on cancer patients to patient-reported outcome measures. The linked data set provides researchers with the potential to investigate the health status and health related quality of life of older adults enrolled in Medicare Advantage Organizations with and without a cancer diagnosis.

Available SEER-MHOS Data

The SEER-MHOS linked data sets available now includes data collected between the years of 1998-2003. The HOS data are from baseline and follow up surveys for Cohorts 1-4 collected during the same time-period.

Data from Cohorts 5 - 6 covering the years 2002-2005 will become available in the spring of 2011.

Interested users are invited to visit the SEER-MHOS website: http://outcomes.cancer.gov/surveys/seer-mhos/
